Fire Incident: Two die at Chibyno fuelling Station.


Mr Okezie, the public relations officer of the Abia State Fire Service confirm to Fire Fighters Magazine correspondence the unfortunate fire incident that occurred at the chibyno fuelling station along Alaoji – Ikot-Ekpene Road in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia, state.

Mr Belenta Belenta, the Director supervising the Abia State Fire Service at the scene of the fire incident said two men died on Wednesday 8th June 2022 as a result of early morning fire outbreak at Chibyno fuelling station along Alaoji – Ikot-Ekpene Road in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia state.

An eye witness who spoke at anonymity at the scene of the fire incident said, he suspected that the victims were involved in an oil bunkering which when they were discharging the petroleum products at the station at the wee hours of the day might have  resulted to the unfortunate fire incident, he said..

The Abia state Fire Service control room were not contacted on time and on arrival at the scene of the incident over five trucks were already consumed by the fire which was caused by an explosion at the site of the incident. However, our fire fighters with the help of the Police who cordoned the area and deprived hoodlums from attacking fire fighters, deployed professionalism and were able to put the fire under control for further spread, Belenta said.

He also said that the police visited the scene of the fire incident and took the corpse of one of the victims of the fire accident who died immediately at the scene to a nearby morgue.

The Public relation officer of Abia State Fire Service said, as at the time of filling this report confirmed that the other victim who was rushed to the hospital had been reported dead also.

An eye witness who spoke on anonymity, said he lived in the area and was awakened by calls around 5: 00 a.m. to come to the scene of the fire incident for rescue.

“Very early this morning around 5 a.m., some persons called to tell me that there is a fire outbreak at Chibyno Fuelling Station at the Ikot-Ekpene Alaoji road.

We called fire fighters who came to the scene which had snowballed into an inferno that covered the whole fuelling station.

“The fuelling station had four trucks which were discharging fuel at the same time.

“We learnt that there was a little spark from the generating set they were using to pump the fuel into their tank which resulted in an explosion,” he narrated.

The eye witness said one person died at the scene of the early morning fire incident while another badly burnt victim was rushed to the hospital.
