In a bid to further deepen its resolve to ensure that fire related disasters are reduced to the barest minimum in the Federal Capital Territory and in line with its mandate, the FCT Fire Service, in partnership with the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and a key private sector driver – Tesodes Ventures Nig. Ltd. has officially kicked off the 2nd phase of its intensive fire safety enlightenment campaign to schools’ initiative across the FCT and by extension inaugurated fire safety club in Government Junior secondary school Garki this 9th October 2019, the first of its kind in Nigeria.
The initiative which is a coordinated effort and a novel approach designed to achieve expected outcomes over a given time frame is aimed to take the campaign directly to schools and from schools to homes and from homes to offices/work or business places in the FCT. The official launch of the 2nd phase of the initiative marks the beginning of a strategic campaign drive which will involve visits to select schools across the FCT, interactions with students and teachers alike, engagements with stakeholders and establishment of fire safety clubs in each school visited amongst others.
It will be recalled that the 1st phase of the campaign began with the inauguration of the FCT Fire Safety Schools Enlightenment Initiative last year precisely on the 10th October, 2018 by the Coordinator, AMMC Tpl. Umar Shuaibu.
Assistant Controller General of the FCT Fire Service, Mr. Opetunsin Julius acting on the mandate of the Hon. Minister of the FCT Mal. Mohammed Musa Bello to ensure that lives and property of FCT residents are secured has demonstrated strong commitment to this course by collaborating with relevant stakeholders such as the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and Tesodes Ventures Nig. Ltd. (producers of Fire Fighters Magazine) to drive the initiative to success.
The Managing Director of Tesodes Ventures Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Fire Fighters Enterprises Limited Engr. Cyprian Effa commends the FCT Fire Service for taking the initiative to schools which he believes will help improve the safety of lives and property in the FCT and calls on other stakeholders in the FCT to join in the initiative and be deliberate in their actions and attitude towards fire safety in the territory.
He also lauded the FCT Minister, Mallam Mohammed Bello and the AMMC Coordinator, Tpl. Umar Shuaibu for being proactive in their approach to the safety of lives and property in the FCT.
He expressed optimism that the campaign would be made even more effective through the use of dedicated channels of public communication such as dedicated publications and radio/television programmes in the FCT.
“We are confident that a dedicated television programme for instance will go a long way in taking this great initiative to the nooks and crannies of the FCT beyond just the schools”, he enthused.
The FCT Fire Safety Schools Enlightenment Initiative is an aggressive fire sensitization campaign to raise the consciousness of the residents of the FCT towards fire related hazards.
